I chose this reflection for my EPortfolio post because I thought that it reflected who I am and who I want to be as a nurse. We were asked to read a book about different specialties in nursing that interest us and why, like labor and delivery, ER nurse, ICU nurse, NICU nurse, etc. We were asked to choose two, and for my two I chose pediatric nursing and a nurse midwife, which requires further education. I also talked about my experience working as a caregiver in assisted living, and how that experience has helped me learn to communicate with patients in a way that I will also need to communicate with patients as a nurse. I talked about how the skills I’ve learned working in this field already are important for my future, like communication, and how that’ll always be important in nursing no matter what specialty you choose. This reflection represents the person I am right now, in my freshman year of college, and it’ll be a nice reflection for me to look back on at the end of nursing school to see any changes I’ve made, and what new skills I’ve learned. This reflection also represents my growing sense of purpose in nursing. It shows the areas of specialty I want to work in as a nurse, and how passionate I am about wanting to work with children and families someday, and how I want to be there for children and families during some of the most meaningful and vulnerable moments of their life. While I was reading about these different specialties, I found myself imagining what kind of nurse I will be, and how I could make a difference. Reading about these specialties also made am realize that nursing is more than just a career- it’s a calling that requires empathy, adaptability because you never know what you’ll be dealing with, as well as patience.
